Wow, I am so sorry to hear this :(

I believe that means there is no one left from that first Johnston City tournament in 1961. Danny Di wasn't in that first one, just 14 players.

He he was inducted into the One Pocket Hall of Fame back when the DCC was at the Executive West. He was funny as hell and really enjoyed himself!!!

Very sad two months for the pool community - Stroud passed three weeks ago, and now Squirrel.

It’s a shame there are no videos of Squirrel playing (at least, I’m not aware of any). From what I read, he had been a top speed player.

Rest in peace, Tuscaloosa Squirrel

Very sorry to hear of the great Marshall Carpenter's passing. He was a real southern gentleman, and a great player for over 70 years. He played "cold" as good as anyone I ever saw. I watched him in a money match up in Hattiesburg, Miss. His opponent was all warmed up and ready to go. He told Squirrel to hit some warmup shots if he wanted. Squirrel fired in 1 spot shot warp speed, and said, "I'm ready".

Marshall was a stand-up guy who was a very respected person/player. I spent some time with him when he was living in LasVegas we would go out to eat often and hang around with one another in the sportsbooks he was doing business with the sports. We occasionally would frequent Tommy Fisher's home (LasVegas gambler) where we would match up pool games with high rollers like Billy Baxter, Doyle Brunson, and other high rollers. Squirrel was fun to be around he had a lot of stories and made you feel comfortable just being around him. Though I never saw him play when he was in his prime word from smart people have it that he played Ronnie Allens speed playing one hole. I can believe it because many great players would make that comparison. R.I.P. Marshall you will be missed.

I made sure to watch him as much as I could when he was in action at Derby City -- every time he came he got into something. One thing I did notice that he did a lot when he knocked a ball away from the bottom rail, he tended to use liberal inside english to kill the cue ball -- consistently. That was obviously something he had ingrained into his game.

I interviewed him for his HOF bio -- I am going to see how much material I have and transcribe it.

He had a son with him at Derby the last time he came I believe. Might have been Marshall also. He was probably a better golfer than pool player. Squirrel loved golf pretty close to pool I believe.

Doc, I am so glad that you were able to give me his address a few years ago. Back then I wanted to add his autograph to my Winning One Pocket book but felt that that may never happen. He sent his autograph and I added it to my book. I knew that that his was one that I had to have. RIP Marshall and thank you, you also gulfportdoc.

Don't mention it, ole buddy. I was happy to be able to hook y'all up. Hey, have you settled into Ariz. yet? Sorry you had to sell that great pool table of yours, and leave that wonderful rec room!
