If you stay off grounds, which I normally do, they check your pool case at the entrance of the casino. Then you have to walk through the casino to get to the tourney room. The service to get a drink is horrible. The food court was decent but way over priced. It's become more of a money grab instead of a pool tournament. I'll save my money this year.

You can park in the hotel lot and avoid going through the casino.

And no matter where you enter they'll check your case -- it's not intrusive, you just have to unzip your case, they see the tops of your joint protectors, and they let you through.

As to the drinks, meh, it's a casino. If paying a couple of extra bucks is a problem bring your own and slip them into the pockets of your jacket as I've seen many guys do. The food, well, yes, not the best but it's a casino BUT it is the Derby. I say suck it up or bring a bunch of granola bars, which isn't so great either.

It is what it is and most guys find a way to make the best of it because it's THE DERBY. Any big event anywhere will be the same or worse.

Buffs was fun once, but DCC has everything except it appears Mitch. Too bad. I was going to play him even...😆

I'm with you on this.

I went to the Buffalo's event a couple of years ago. Stayed in the French Quarter, ate fabulous food, and sweated some great matches ring side. But you can only do that every so often and then want to do something else (thinking about The Open next year : -o

Generally speaking, the DCC is a great event, and most guys find a way to make that work, for at least a short spread.

Since you been there, full blown Casino you walk through the whole way back. It allows smoking right outside the main room doors and has a shitty food court... last year it was inedible....as he said they search your case every time upon entry which is a hassle but I dont mind it for saftey against crazies...
Besides that pretty much the same setup. I just load my case with snacks etc and hang out at the table in the action room we usually commandeer, in the balcony or watch a preferred match downstairs with friends etc. This year with railyard we have other options so it might provide some relief. You just have to work around the new casino a little.

I played cards the last few years, but last year a dealer at my table was flashing cards to one side of the table. I told the pit boss and he ignored me so I quit. I've been around card rooms quite a bit in my youth so I'm not a idiot. I doubt I'll play cards again if thats how it is... Greg Sullivan mentioned he dislikes the new casino but there just isn't any other options at this time.
For some reason I could have sworn I just went this year in 2022, but I did not. 2021 was cancelled, so my last one was 2020 right before the rona hit.

I'll definitely go again and compete but I don't enjoy the new set up personally. Like you said, it is what it is.

Nobody likes the new setup.. Not even Mark. The absolute worst part is the 21 yr minimum age restriction the casino brings with it. Cuts out way too many players and fans.
Still the best tournament in the world though. We get to compete and watch surrounded by the best players in the world for a reasonable fee. And its right down the road...

I really enjoy playing in it. I'll definitely go back cause I enjoy competing, but last year just left a bad taste in my mouth. My biggest issue with the new set up is there isn't a nice place to sit around and have conversations with people. I remember sitting around and talking with Mike Medley for hours. God rest his soul. You can't do that now because they replaced all that with slot machines.

Mike was a good guy for sure! I remember talking with him about his match vs Efren at the DCC where he almost beat him like it was yesterday.

I usually do the granola bar / energy bar stuff anyways every derby so that's not new for me. I don't mind the check at entry for safety reasons either. I plan on doing an AirBnB like I have the last few times I attended although I have always been jealous of those who could just walk from the pool room right to their room without leaving lol.

Hope to see some old friends and make some new ones!

With the new setup, do they at least have more tables so you don't have to wait 18 hours between matches?

Negative. I did have time to practice and hit balls on the table my matches were on. It's impossible to get any extra time on the equipment the Sunday the 1 pocket starts.
