I'll try to keep this one from being so lengthy!
I was in the same frame of mind as many of you have been or are now concerning Cliff and his bite. Over time though, my opinion of Cliff changed and although his antics can be frustrating at times, I have thoroughly enjoyed the time he and I have spent talking and hanging out when he comes to my weekly tournaments. What can I say? I feel sorry for the guy. Sure, he has bitten me a little here and there but since I don't have much, at all, it is rare that he puts a bite on me.
Last night Cliff asked me if I would "put it out there" that he is looking for a sponsor for the Scotty Townsend Memorial. His birthday is in 2 days (3/8/1961) on which he will turn 58. March 20th of this year will mark the 1 year anniversary of his stroke. He desperately wants to get back on the horse that threw him and play in this upcoming event.
I know that if I was in a position where I could afford it, I would do this for him in a heartbeat! Unfortunately, the occasional 20 dollar bill I throw him won't cover this and I can barely afford to sponsor myself in a local bar table tournament once a week! I know there are plenty out there who feel he has made his bed and must now lie in it, but I have to believe there are others who feel just as I do. Others who are willing to look past all that garbage and acknowledge Cliff for what he has done for our beloved game. And of those, there are a few who can afford to put him in this tournament and let him show the world what true heart looks like! If you haven't seen him in awhile, you would be surprised! Can he play like the Cliff of old? No, but I truly believe his heart and love of the game has grown since the stroke. It has given him somewhat of a reality check helping him to realize he can't take his knowledge and skills for granted. The progress he has made is nothing less than remarkable! The only way that happens is by having the heart of a champion and the desire to excel!
