I was looking at Larry's new thread and saw Larry Ross in the picture on the rail. This got me to thinking and wondering about Jose Parica, who Larry has been friends with for many years.

I have not heard anything about Jose for quite a while and he also has been missing from the tournament scene. I remember when Jose was inducted into the one pocket.org Hall Of Fame and he was truly honored and grateful for the award.

I have tangled with Jose a few times, mostly on the 6 x 12 at Hard Times in Bellflower. A fierce competitor who was always fun to be around, In the pool room or the racing book, I hope he is ok. Jose is one of the good guys.

I like Jose.

First time I ever saw him (about '95) he was tangled up in a race with Grady for $5000. As I recall, they played two sets and Jose won both fairly easily, but Grady won the tournament.

Anyway I had a front-row seat for their match and two guys behind me are talking. One of them says, "That f***kin' little Mexican can really play." :lol

Short Jose 1Pkt story

Short Jose 1Pkt story

I'm old but new to the game.

Couple years ago I donated to a local small single elimination, race to 3, 1pkt tournament in Rancho Cucamonnnnnggaaaa, Ca at Stix billiards.

I played Jose. Actually, I watched Jose play. I lost 3-0.

I made 3 balls in three games.:eek::eek:

Two balls were failed takeouts, pocketed in his hole, that won two games for Jose.

My only ball pocketed in my hole was another takeout from Jose's pocket that double kissed into my pocket. Jose acknowleged the fluked shot with a double raised eye brow 'tap-tap'...ala Grouch Marx.:p:p

When the match was over, I shook his hand and went to the tournament board, where I told em..'Jose got that one.' Alex, the owner of Stix, laughed and said, 'OK, thanks Bill'.

...re John's original post...neither have I, seen or heard anything of Jose locally for quite a while...I too hope he's doing well.

For reasons completely unknown to me, Jose Parica hung out with JoeyA and me at the 2009 DCC, for like two hours, telling us war stories, about his game, his history, the Philippines, Cialis (not kidding), how to tell who the best player in a session is, and it was really pretty cool.

Four years later I was given the opportunity to play a match against the legendary iron man. To save you the suspense, I lose 3-0, but I did get to six balls two of games. It was pretty unbelievable for a guy like me to play a player of Jose’s caliber.

Several times I left him far away with a ball straight in to my pocket and he would go up and with his cue carefully measure the angle from a ball sitting out in the open, to the side rail, AND THEN measure the angle from the rail to the ball to telegraph *the exact angle* he would take to snuggle the CB right to the side of a ball and a position I would not like.

The coupe de grace went like this: I had purposely left him with the 14 ball near the first diamond at the far end of the long rail on his side but with the cue ball semi-jacked up on the eleven near the opposite corner pocket. Basically a 110 degree angle. Jose looked at the shot for a disconcertingly short period of time, walked along the long rail to his pocket running his hand down the cloth to detect any errant bits of chalk and then gently, brilliantly, without so much as touching a rail precision, runs the 14 8' down the table to his pocket. The cue ball races back and forth and lands just so for a two-railer, which he shoots in with great aplomb.

Jose is a super nice guy. I know it stings him a bit about recognition in the BCA HOF. He told me he has beaten Efren more then Efren has beaten him.

My guess John, with his age and all, he may be tiring of runnin' with the herd. His game will never be as before, he's just livin' and tending to his garden like your self.

They were playing in a final at Hollywood Billiards about 8 years ago and everyone wanted to bet on Efren. I took a bunch of bets and after Jose jumped out to something like an 8-0 lead the betters were trying to negotiate a lessor payout. Jose beat him I believe 13-5 and I made a nice chunk of change.

After that I think Efren got the best of Jose in most of their later meetings.

I believe Jose's wife owns some kind of a business -- maybe an assisted living sort of thing, which makes it possible for him to back off chasing the pool payouts at this point in his life.

I mean really, BCA:
* The leader of the Philippine invasion
* Winner of many more major tournaments than some other recent inductees
* Solid and long successful career as a champion player in numerous disciplines of the sport

I think his biggest problem is frankly being in the shadow of Efren's popularity -- add to that the fact that he never won the US Open. But take Efren out of the picture and compare him to the rest of the pool world for his generation, and look at other major tournaments aside from only focusing on the US Open and there is no one more deserving for BCA HOF recognition, in my opinion.

I agree Steve.

When I went to my first Derby a few years ago, I ran into Spanish Mike Lebron in the lobby as soon as I got there. He said.. "Come here kid. You gonna save money on your room. You split the room and stay with my friend."

His friend of course was Jose, and it helped to make my first Derby extra cool. Talk about a nice guy! We talked a lot about his being the first to come to the U.S., and as others have said, his career vs Efren. He had some great stories about his big gambling wins. And horse racing wins/losses lol.

One of the highlights of my week was sweating his match vs Mike Dechaine. It came down to the last game. Mike needed 1 and Jose needed two. Jose hit a long rail, behind the back Straightback bankshot while drawing the cue 8 feet to land behind his out ball. Mike whined for at least 10 minutes to anyone who would listen. It was awesome.

Here is a pic from the trip, which I posted a while back.

Jose!!!

Jose!!!

As a teen I caught him at JOB in Nashville. He was always courteous and polite, and willing to show a shot or three. He owned the back room, when it was filled with Daultons, Joyners, and a slew of others.
It didn't matter what he spotted Paez in an ahead match, it was seldom close.
if he could have stayed out of the back room he could have locked down lots of tournaments. But he could sure lock down the cash!

Sort of like Jimmy Caras.

I have not seen Jose in over one year. I had his phone number and now its disconnected. I have asked all the Filipinos in the LA area about seeing him and they tell me no one knows where he is. He has not been to any tournaments and I used to see him at Santa Anita and I don't think he's there at all. Any word about Jose would be great for us who love and appreciate him.

Just texted with Jose. He's good. His mom passed in December and he went to the Philippines for a few months.
