The 1 pocket isn't the problem. The 9 ball started on Wednesday and ended Sunday morning at 10 am. They played almost 25 hours non-stop to finish the 9 ball. The original event went from race to 7 to a race to 9. Almost every 9 ball match I'm betting went at least 2 hours or more. The 9 ball is the time killer.
Bad Boys at the Western BCA Regionals, largest in the nation, in 9-ball went to a time performance one year. If you had not completed a certain amount of games in a certain time they imposed a shorter race. Well, they had 1 guy going around checking the match time card, and it was a nightmare.
The next year they shortened the race to like 7, and the tournament went like clock work, for a match was played every 1-1/2 hrs. I know, for I went on the losers side and every 1-1/2 hrs. I was in the next match. Everyone was happy!

In 9-ball a race to 7 vs.9 helps the weaker player. Anytime you have a shorter race the weaker player has a better chance. 1/2 hr. difference in match time is huge.

A race to 7 gives the lesser skilled players a better chance, benefits the tournament to stay on schedule, still lets players play the top pros, and keeps the participant level high which helps the purse. Everyone is happy. Go to race to 9 in the final rounds if that works.

If 9-ball banks is continually running over schedule then go to 7 ball banks, it is more exciting, and gives the weaker player a better chance. Probably could go to a race to 4.

Raise the entry fee until the numbers start to drop off. Find what works for the tournament and the casino. Coinciding the events helps keep players there for more days, casino friendly. So the format is good!

In OP you know my answer, go to express op. A cleaner, a faster, a higher standard game. Benefits the better mover, pros.

Thanks Kybanks!

Then I guess their other option is to travel to Indonesia and play with all the other champions. Not sure how those expenses compare to what the prize fund is, but I'd say it's worse than derby. SVB made 5x or more than his expenses for Derby week

That really wasn’t my central point.

My point was that it’s not much of a payday for a professional at the apex of his sport. It is especially not much of a payday when considered against the week-long grind of the Derby.

I wouldn't mess with the banks as its draws in the most players/ Spectators
One pocket Grady rule from the start.
Shortening the 9 ball to 7 games alone will make up a ton of time.

Pointing to the most difficult (and costly) variable to change isn't going to help very much.

It would also be nice if they added a million dollars and had 300 referees and catered the event and had one of those cute girls with the round number placards that pranced around the table between racks.
Are you really not understanding they have too many players and not enough tables?

They ask what the problem is about not being able to finish on time…that is the problem…the only one…there is no other.

To be honest There are two things going on here and neither of them bad imo
Derby has gotten to popular for the sapce so either accept it or get a bigger venue if it is cost effective.
Pro pool has more options of tournaments where they can make a better paycheck so derby is not necisarliy a good option if there is a better one for them. This seems like just a good thing for pool in genearly that pros have options.

just my opinion

If they keep the same amount of players with the same amount of tables and do the same scheduling…I’ll bet anyone what they want, it will never end at the scheduled time.

The amateurs make the event! Raising the rates on the amateurs will be the end of the Derby. The Pros complaining are the ones that don't have any heart to grind out tough action. SVB and Shaw both quit during matches from what I understand.
I think the main draw for the amateurs is that they get to compete and rub elbows with the pros on an equal footing, and they get to watch a lot of top players. The second thing is the relatively cheap entry.

It sounds to me like, absent larger purses, the pros will start drifting away, which was evident this year. Now it may be that the DCC consisting primarily of no-name players would still be prestigious enough to attract big crowds. But I suspect that the allure would eventually fade.

Ahhh, that’s cool. I like helping those that are blind to something…to see. 👍🏻

Unfortunately Greg doesn’t give a shit. He and Diamond are content with not greasing squeaky wheels. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Greg really isn’t involved with anything anyway anymore. You’d have to deal with Chad and he really doesn’t give a shit either.

Nothing changes as long as it stays the same, it’s easier to deal with same mistakes time after time than to correct them and deal with new ones that may come up I guess.

I disagree completely with the “don’t give a shit” comment. If you talk to either one they care a lot! Especially Greg!!

Running a pool tournament -- even one this big -- is not rocket science.

25 years later, it remains the same hot mess. If someone actually gave 2cents it stands to reason that a reasonable fix would have been found by now.

I'm sure it is, but the event will continue to produce 500 players per event with or without the top players.

No event is immune from the laws of economics.

When the costs of travel vs the value of the experience start to reverse attendance will drop.

It really doesn’t show Steve.

You can make your mouth say anything but what you do is what matters.

They haven’t done shit about anything. Sorry but show I’m wrong. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Top players are speaking with their feet. 😞

I posted these comments AZ:

So what everything is shitty, just be glad it’s there. 🙄

That’s about the motto for the whole country now.

It appears the tournament stayed pretty much on schedule, if you compare the original schedule with the updated schedule they came out with on 1/27 Saturday. Any comments!
The payout for All-Around Champion is 1st 20 g's, 2nd 3 g's, 3rd 2 g's.
So this event has turned into a WPA event, WPA must put in some bucks otherwise why have them, any info on this!
It seems to me that a long lasting 25 year event would have no problem starting on Tuesday vs. Thursday to add a couple of days to the event so the event can stay as an open event without capping the number of players per event.

I always thought watching banks was like watching paint dry and simultaneously scratching your nails on the blackboard. Banking plays its biggest role in one pocket. Require contestants that sign up for banks to also participate in one pocket. Make that would thin the heard. In addition up the ante to play.
