Bad Boys at the Western BCA Regionals, largest in the nation, in 9-ball went to a time performance one year. If you had not completed a certain amount of games in a certain time they imposed a shorter race. Well, they had 1 guy going around checking the match time card, and it was a nightmare. The 1 pocket isn't the problem. The 9 ball started on Wednesday and ended Sunday morning at 10 am. They played almost 25 hours non-stop to finish the 9 ball. The original event went from race to 7 to a race to 9. Almost every 9 ball match I'm betting went at least 2 hours or more. The 9 ball is the time killer.
The next year they shortened the race to like 7, and the tournament went like clock work, for a match was played every 1-1/2 hrs. I know, for I went on the losers side and every 1-1/2 hrs. I was in the next match. Everyone was happy!
In 9-ball a race to 7 vs.9 helps the weaker player. Anytime you have a shorter race the weaker player has a better chance. 1/2 hr. difference in match time is huge.
A race to 7 gives the lesser skilled players a better chance, benefits the tournament to stay on schedule, still lets players play the top pros, and keeps the participant level high which helps the purse. Everyone is happy. Go to race to 9 in the final rounds if that works.
If 9-ball banks is continually running over schedule then go to 7 ball banks, it is more exciting, and gives the weaker player a better chance. Probably could go to a race to 4.
Raise the entry fee until the numbers start to drop off. Find what works for the tournament and the casino. Coinciding the events helps keep players there for more days, casino friendly. So the format is good!
In OP you know my answer, go to express op. A cleaner, a faster, a higher standard game. Benefits the better mover, pros.
Thanks Kybanks!
