Close proximity shot

This situation came up in the Gomez/Compton match that poolactiontv.com is streaming this weekend. Compton's pocket is lower right as we look at the table. It looks to me that the cue and 2 ball are separated but close. Is it even possible to hit this with enough legs and no foul to send it two rails near your pocket??

Does he contact 14 first and carom into 2?
It's Chip's shot, so you don't have to concern yourself with what Roberto is doing -- unless you want to :) I just took the screen shot at an odd time. Either way, it is a "close proximity shot" and to make it be a good shot, you need it to have legs. Can any of you hit it hard enough with a controlled and non-foul stroke? That is basically my question.

Sure, I think the 2 can be banked 2-rails. Looks to me like there's half a ball separation between the CB and OB. Shooting down on the CB with that much separation should allow for plenty of speed.

yes if he is shooting directly into the 2 ball. but i would assume a fast table. looks like he has to cut it more than the arrows say though and that might make it hard to hold the cueball. but pictures always lie.

Looks like there is plenty of room.

Here is a one pocket shot where the cue ball and the object ball are an inch apart (less than half a ball). It is possible with a level stroke to bank the first ball and draw for position on the second. Of course, if you foul the cue ball the draw won't be there. It requires one of the standard close-ball techniques.

I kinda remember the shot but can't remember if Chip jacked up or not. I believe they are playing DCC rules of no foul if 45 degrees, so that's another way to get power without fouling. Or use the proper technique as described by others.

Same thing i'm thinking. Has to be cut more. But yes, watch Danny Smith's matches sometime, he's probably the best I've seen at it and gets the most power. Elevate and pop it.

I saw Corey duel perform this technique in a live match. I noticed it as JJ was announcing it.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/bigZzXk1z3Qom4Ju7 at a 1/4" the ob creates more resistance than at a larger gap, thus is wants to hold the cb back from fouling. I stayed more on center rhe for this shot to keep the cb behind the 14. I could of drawn back by going more below center.

At a bigger gap of say a chalk width you can use the same stroke, but if you have to stroke straight at it on center cb say, I then would elevate the cue using a short nip stroke.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/UX3hM69XYzmYJwsb9 it may appear that I am cutting the ball but I am not, it is the rhe causing that effect, plus you will get a slight push to the left. I am more comfortable at 1/4" than a bigger gap.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/bh5rpjP797qC9NAx5 I obviously can not allow the stroke to go through, so I need to generate enough power with the nip stroke.

Steve, thanks for posting this scenario. The close ob shots come up a whole lot and it is the most misunderstood and abused shot in all of pool. Whitey
