I try to put the OB just short of his side pocket, the CB on the rail as near to the first diamond above my pocket as possible.

Look at this way , nonbreaker gets first swing at a offensive shot.
Wether there is a long enough rope out there to hang him depends on what the breaker left , and the shooters abillities.

I was thinking about leaving the OB where you stated but leaving the CB on the rail close to the first diamond below my pocket. Any comment?

Sounds like we're saying the same thing.

Bank the object ball around the side pocket. Cue ball ends up on first diamond opposite it. Only risk is making the ball in the side and leaving a one rail bank.

Keeping the OB near or just short of the side pocket guards against a two railer to his hole and keeps the potential for a scratch foremost in your opponents mind.
