We never know what our lives deal us day to day. Is it possible to enter at the tournament site? I don't know if I qualify but I would love to spectate (and match up for cheap), if I can't enter. I'm in Maryland...not too far away.
It looks like you qualify, so yes, you should sign up if you want to play.

I will be there to play in tournament and play nearly anyone. No round robin, just because. We will have better plans on dates in future.

Lou, inot attending, hope to see you in Houston. (Are you 65?) I truly do not know. From your posts, I would bet you are.

Steve, open it up to anyone that we think is under 700 Fargo. Need to rethink timing of MOT for next year.

I really do like to attend or tournaments and the competition. If we do not see you this year, hopefully next year.

Also, thanks for the XO stopping the Keystone pipeline. All of the extra costs started there. Common sense.

Hey, Robert, yes I'm legal for the Seniors -- coming up on 69 this year.

Whether I attend or not is TBD. Gail and I have several trips planned for the Fall and I'm not sure I can squeeze in a run to Houston but we shall see.

If it turns out to be 16 total, that may be the perfect time to try out a round robin format.? Maybe 4 groups of 4 with the top finishers going to a finals round robin???

Or, the top 2 making a single elim final round of 8?

I'm not going so just offering a suggestion. A lot of play for all.
Dave, I know you do not like to be political, so I know this is a highly regarded subject. So for this reason I highly respect that you have brought this up. I think since the discussion has now focused on such a poor turn out, then this very much concerns you! I think then RR relates in that respect also. I too am not going so have stayed off of this thread. But it has opened up as to how to attract more players.

We had a huge thread related to RR, in which Steve stated that for the next MOT he was going to run a RR for the 1st rd. of 32, and further stated; "that players want to play more, I'll give it to them", not quoted exactly word for word, but intent correct.

Maybe something happened that did not allow Steve's intent for a 1st rd. RR. When this MOT was first threaded, and as I recall, it stated that the location was decided by committee. So, is there a MOT committee?

Besides being immune compromised. For me, the not having the 1st rd. RR was the main factor in deciding not to attend this event, I just can not justify for me, (I do not play any one pocket), being two and out, first day, with a minimal amount of games played. Whereas as in a field of 32 in 4 groups of 8 RR race to 2, I get to play 7 players, minimum of 14 games, maximum of 21 games. Two advance out of each group to rd. of 16, works for me.

A race to two gives a definite winner of each match up. Makes it easier to determine the two players that advance. Two players advancing still maintains the same format as double elimination of 50% of the players advance, 32 players narrowed down to 16, you just play more, and play more players.

I like that, whether I advance or not. This place has plenty of tables and if I am knocked out I can go on to enjoy something else. So for me this now justifies and gives me a better reason to attend, for I get to play 7 active members (my pers that I post with) of which I will get to better meet them and know them, and plus I get to play more games before I am out.

I think this would attract more players, which is on topic.

Dennis, that doesn’t sound like me. Maybe if you overlooked something, like where I said something like “if that’s what our members want”.

You will get action for sure if you show up, but I'm sorry I don't see that you actually qualify to play in this tournament. Future ones, yes, as long as you continue to be "active" here in the forum. The eligibility requirements that we established a few years ago for our member's tournaments are below. They were established because the whole idea of the MOT's is for "active" members here to have a chance to get together and compete in person. It is a privilege one earns by participating here. You are off to a good start but need to keep it going :)

Member's Only Tournament (MOT) eligibility requirements:
  • Has been a member at least 6 months prior to the tournament date
  • A minimum of 20 posts, to be reached at least 30 days before the tournament
  • There is no Fargo limit for players who reach these requirements here in the forum
Sorry but unless you had a different user name earlier, you don't quite meet either of those. But if you show up, you may end up playing as much or more than the rest of us, lol.

Steve I see 53% of voting was a "Yes" with a fargo stipulation.

A 700 player that knows OP would snap off the MOT. In all of Oregon there is 1 maybe 2 players @ 700. 700 players beat up on lesser skilled players a high %.
A 670 player that knows OP would be very tough. In the Western BCA, largest regional in the nation, there are probably 10 or less players, in Or., Wa, & Id.
Qualifying for WBCA regional requires 8 weeks of local league play. For a 670 player to maintain that rating they have to win locally 85% of their games. At 80% you lose 1 fargo point for every game loss. So a 670 player, say having a few beers, not really caring that much that drops a few games here or there could lose 20 or more fargo points over a session. If you shoot @ approx. 90% your rating will go up. This all depends on the skill level of your league.

For WBCA they consider an Elite player as having a 625 or higher rating. That is their top level of play. They generally have approx. 1500 to over 2000 players in their event. Elite players amount to approx. 35 or less.

So generally, at a regional an elite player can improve their rating or not. Anyone can enter the Elite, say a 550 player, but in today's world going up against a known higher fargo rated player can be intimidating, making it much easier for the higher rated player, and on the score card your rating is right on there.

Seniors and women play right in there against everyone in their fargo rating level. They used to be separate, of which I felt was fairer. It use to be a top senior could not play in seniors, you had to be a B or C or novice to get in. So a skilled senior had to battle it out among the younger players. Now there is no senior division at all.

Just thought I add a little info about fargo and a 670 -700 rating, for those that do not play in organized events where fargo ratings are required to enter and to play against your peer ratings.

Another way to get a high rating is to win a fargo recognize local tournament that has some fairly high rated players in it. That happened to a player protege of mine from my town, and his fargo went up to 703, he won every match - 9-ball. He is now a 695, and In OP he would be no threat, never played it.

But a face book OP.org member of 700 would probably know OP and that is different.

I’m pretty sure we have already had several players over 670 Fargo who are also very experienced at One Pocket in our MOT’s.

I’m more concerned a “One Pocket only” specialist signing up who does not really have a Fargo. But setting a Fargo limit skims off a few ringers anyway.

Steve, your tournament has a fargo rating max, so no one from FB should be able to get in without a verification of their fargo rate. So you should be ok. But yes, verify, ask others who might know this player and so forth. If they do not have a fargo rate, oh well, they better get one, or have forum verified membership, as you stated.

But yes, in today's world the fargo rate can kill your action, unless you can use it undercover (you are much better than your fargo rate).

I cannot participate in Western bca unless my fargo rate is verified. Usually our league operator verifies and signs off on a couple of requirements.
A new unknown player to bcapl/csi league play, starts off with a rating of 450 or so. But, if your league has a good operator and the player is better than that then they can get the national board to adjust it, so it is fair. If their league is set up so at the end of a session they have team playoffs, then that allows for sandbagging. My league does not have playoffs, use to so sandbagging was horrible, so now we play hard (no sandbagging) for the top teams get in the money.

A 670 rating is very high, especially for older players, but it can and does happen if they are talented and can maintain their talent.
In FB we can expect younger players in the range of 500 - 670 to participate that know OP and be formable. And yes, for this year's MOT I believe they will step up if travel at this short notice will allow this. We'll see how FB in Florida and nearby respond.
I mean, why not play and meet other FB's and Forum Players, and have a chance at some good prize $.

Good luck with the tournament, just a little insight on fargo rate, that I am sharing as I know it.

I guess a good question is, will your MOT tournament be fargo tracked? Players get a fargo rate or adjusted fargo rate, I do not have a clue how these regular or somewhat local tournaments work for fargo rate.

I’ve only had a FargoRate for the last 1.5 years because no one in Austin would play me 1P the two days I was there so I got in their 9 ball tournament and beat one good player. Next thing I know my FargoRate was through the roof(for me anyways). It’s been falling ever since. I only have a robustness of 100, that includes the 11 1P games from the US Open that they just started adding 1P to the ratings. There’s plenty of players better than me that have no FargoRate just on this wed site let alone across the country
