For this most contraversial thread. The reason I see no end in sight is precisely the reason the One Pocket Hall of Fame should welcome Fats with open arms. What organization in the game of pocket billiards would not be honored to include this most popular character of the pool hustling era that ever lived. Long after all of us posting are gone and forgotten, people will still be talking about him. Look at us. Fatty has been gone seventeen years and there is no hotter topic.

"Alfie. Fats played all games good...even three cushion," Eddie Taylor.

So come on everyone: Stop shewing the Fat. Those of you who saw or heard about him, those posting their opinions just to be included in the "Fats" circle and those of us fortunate enough to call him friend. His bragging, which seems to be peoples only complaint against him, didn't hurt anyone and it helped the revive and promote the sport we are now enjoying. RIP Fatty.
Keep it respectful. Alfie
Alfie, this post says a lot, and for those that weren't convinced that the fat man should be inducted (after reading this) should be now. I feel that it would be an injustice in many ways if Fats doesn't get inducted. I also feel that the biggest injustice would fall onto the Hall for not having him as one of the inductees, Fats was a great humanitarian, a great character, a great ambassador of our game, an excellent player and gambler, and the games largest legend without a doubt.

I didn't know Fats as well as you, or for that matter as well as many, however, I did know him well enough to be invited to his home, sit down with him and his wife over dinner as he was telling his tales of the road stories, and more. Fats use to call me "Cardone" With the emphasis on the "done" end of the name (long o of course) but I knew Fats liked me because I played so well and was dating a beauty from Carbondale. The girl I was dating knew Fats well and he adored her (as he adored many women) but he especially liked her. Fats whenever we saw one another would always ask me if I was still seeing her and we would talk a little. I felt special to be able to sit and talk with fatty, just being seen with him was special to me. Fats to me was a really cool guy who made people laugh, and where ever he was there was a crowd. Fats was the Michael Jordan of pool, and I'm proud to have known him well enough to have spent some time with him and also gamble with him. He was "triple smart" and a character that will never be forgotten. I know that Fats will be inducted into the One Pocket Hall Of Fame, there's no way that we can dog it that bad and not induct him.:frus:D

FATS Was the greatest, and could play very well. He was one of a kind and had you spent any time around him, you would love him as much as I did. Kind generous and as his orignal nickname implied "triple smart"
Rod. <--- He should be in !

I just went back through this thread and decided to bump this.
I said what most have agreed on.
I just used fewer words. :)

For anyone that's still unclear, this was a very old thread. Fats was inducted the same year as Parica. Well deserved too. To me he holds even a more special place because of the way he took care of animals..

Fats Not In???

Fats Not In???

What's this about Fats not being in the OnePocket HOF??? That's insane and a complete miscarriage of justice. He promoted the game to the public and I'm guessing in the 40's & 50's he was one of the best at it.

I say we hold a special election right now and vote him in.

I believe most of the posters know he's in. It's such a good thread we've just ignored it.
I did notice 1 or 2 that didn't seem to know, hope they find their way back home tonight. :)

For setting a lot of us straight. I, personally, was glad I was out of the loop on this info. It gave me a chance to stick up for my buddy.

Dr. Bill. I'm honored...

Dr. Bill. I'm honored...

to even have my name mentioned by you and, even more, to have you side with me on this. We were out there a lot at the same time, but other than seeing you at some tournament we never really met. Thank God I didn't run across you without recognizing you. I would have gotten my young ass paddeled good. But your reputation for awesome play and decent behaivour preceeds you by leaps and bounds. The name Incardona is as much a part of pool's golden era as anyone's...a class act.
However, I don't agree with you about my being closer to the Fat man than you. Dinner at the Wanderone home is about as close as you can get to being one of his best friends.
Keep it going, pal. Alfie

P.S You are the only Dr. Bill I like recieving.

First game for $900, fats wins, play for days and nights, and hotel close by. Money got bigger, playing best player in area, a rounder/hustler. He married a duquoin gal, name don something. Fats got hungry during playing. Ev was a Waitress @ nightclub 2-3 miles away, liquor and dance floor, with fried chicken and barbecue. Name Evening Star. Irene and Ev were waitresses. Fats came on Evs night off to eat, and missed out. Next night Joe and Muzz owners, talked about the big gamblers in town. Tue night Ev back on, gals said you missed out. Tipped Big $5 per meal, and Ev missed out. And all the games and dollars bet. Made smart conversation she said. Tue. Pm they come in, Fats had a Real young gal, ev was 22yr old and this gal was 17 and worked in another restaurant. Fats let 17 yr old drive around in his new car while he played, and she just loved that, ev said.

Evs words

Car was dark the seventeen yr old drove. Ed King the chef at Evs place, made great Fried chicken, fats loved it, never eatin It so good anywhere in life. Fats told ev, to always cook fried chicken, fav meal, he had chicken allot in NY and thought it was supposed to be half rotten, poor frigeration back then. Fats was at restaurant with the girl, but sat in Evs section, first words fats said to Ev, would ya wanna go out tonight with me, I’ll get rid of Ruthie the seventeen yr old. And dbl back around eleven and pic up ev, ev turned him down, no place to go and she wanted to get dressed up, but tomorrow night ok to see me. Next pm at eleven, the Greek showed up instead, and on the way back the Greek has his eyes on me too. And he parked in front of the theatre and what could he and I do, well I said I’m dated up with fats tonight, so I refused, so he took me on then to where fats was, and when we arrived, there he was, standing on the sidewalk waitin'….

Hey Guys
Im new here and a beginning one pocket player.

Freddy, you mentioned earlier in the thread a story about Red the Preacher. I was in the Cue Club in Vegas when he had the heart attack that killed him, it was around 2004 if im not mistaken. I was playing on table 10 with my wife and Preach went to the can and came out and started staggering towards table 9, in front of mine, and he fell on it. So i went to the counter and told the girl to call 911 for an ambulance and they came and took him away.
The guy checked himself out of the hospital that night or the next one and went home ! He died that night.
I only knew him hello and goodbye but he was always woofing at somebody trying to get something going, either that or talking about the casinos.

Also Freddy, why did you put such a big knock on McGoorty ? I love that book, one of the funniest things i have ever read. After all the bios i have read, nearly everyone b.s. about themself to some extent or another but this guy was about as brutally honest as you could get. He didnt glamorize himself in any way shape or form that i could see, ddint make himself out to be anything more than a knock around guy and a drunk.
Im just curious as i know youre from Chicago and all.
Thanks.

What the hell did I say about Danny McGoorty? I never even met him or knew him. I think it was Grady who didnt like him.

I went back and found that post that I made. What you left out is that I made that post after getting steamed up by Lou Figeroa, posting that quote by McGoorty that knocked Fats so badly. I was basically quoting Grady. Plus McGoorty was dead wrong about Fats. Swimming rivers of shit to play him was utter nonsense. When I was in Miami in the 60s, Fats was staying at the Fontainbleu in the "season," when many of the pool players were sleeping in their cars.

What I said after getting heated up by Lou:

the Beard

I]You used the right guy to talk about how much bullsh*t and self promotion Fats did. Mcgoorty was originally from Chicago so his story is known to us peoples. His book is filled with as much unadultered horse dung as the stables at Churchill Downs. Ask Grady what a wonderful reference point Danny McGoorty was, and how much you could rely on his word. The only thing he told the truth about was that he was a drunken lout.

A sick man, a very sick man

A sick man, a very sick man

Going back into this thread and trying to find the post I made that took a bite at Danny McGoorty, I came across something unbelievable. Post # 9 of this thread by CJ#1 -- from the year 2009!-- was just re-edited by the Claim Jumper! Today! In an effort to clean up and maybe justify some sort of nitwit position he usually takes, he inserted a post I made yesterday into his post that he made 4 years ago! He is evidently trying to make like I said that 4 years ago! The man who says everybody else has a thin skin, is trying to clean up what he said 4 years ago. Somebody tell this guy to get a life.
