This was originally posted on 1-30-11. I have made one extremely small edit that would take a microscope to see, it was bothering me for a year now:).

Freddy, thanks for introducing this to everyone at the D.C.C., I'm glad they all enjoyed it as much as we did here.

Here's something I've been working on, off & on for a couple of years. I hope you enjoy it.

.................You'll Be Up Here Yet.................

It was the night after Derby and all alone in the room
Just one shadow was moving, an old man with a broom
The door creaked open and others came in
Cornbread & Breit, Eddie Taylor and then

Camp & Kieckhefer, no need to be first
Straight from Grand Rapids the great Harold Worst
Childress, de Oro & Fats were there too
Mexican Johnny, Rags & Johnny McCue

The door stayed open as they all filed through
Layton, Lingo & Mizerak too
Too many to count, so fast they came in
The old man was bewildered to see them again

Some asked his name, he said Last Pocket Joe
They told him "we'll be here one night then we'll pack up and go"
For the last nine days they've held D.C.C.
This one is ours, just sit back and see

See what happens when the greatest get up a stake
Watch Bugs bank out, he'll make no mistakes
Mosconi & Greenleaf, 150's and out
N.Y. Blackie "slip-stroking", that's what it's about

Watch Edgar play Poochie till deep in the night
Shakin' & Bakin' till he gets it right
Salami will stake him for something to do
While Waterdog's nodding, he'll wake up at two

Yes they'll all come here from some faraway place
Taberski, Rudolph & there's Babyface
Schaefer & Hoppe will be here at nine
Matching up for the title at 18.1 balkline

Spaeth & Eliot and Romburg too
Will be playing some banks till at least 1:00 or 2:00
McCue & Bugs may also join in
If Blood shows up it could go till 10:00

Lassiter, James Evans & Heisler are here
Just awaiting their chance, they've shown no fear
St. Jean & Ponzi, Andrews both
Are in deep conversation with big Hubert Cokes

Strawberry & Clem just got off of the train
Followed closely by Lauri and of course Irving Crane
Ervolino, Cochran & Pittsburgh John
Are up at the counter to see which table they're on

Boston Shorty, Sang Lee and St. Louis Lou
Speak with Jim Caras till there's something to do
They know that it's coming they know that it's soon
It's just once a year they take over this room

All that they ask for their travel and sweat
Is to let them stick around, let them play a set

Let Fatty play Camp & match up for a car
Let Taylor & Bugs bank out to the stars
Let Cornbread play Horseface, they play 10-8
They'll play all night, they really can't wait

Let Luther play Boom Boom, 9-ball all night
We'll finally see which one gets it right
Let Lori play men who are just too afraid
To beat on a woman like others they've played

Mosconi & Greenleaf will be put to the test
Finally they'll settle which one was the best
They'll all play all night & through the next day
None will get tired, they came here to play

They'll all leave a message when it comes time to leave
Just enjoy us & love us and always believe
We're always there in your memories and dreams
Helping to guide you as tough as it seems

So go on and play and when you run out
Remember we're watching, we'll stand and we'll shout
Though you will not hear us you'll know we are there
Though you will not see us you'll know that we care

So don't feel bad & don't feel sad
We know you never will forget
Just think of us from time to time
For you'll be up here yet

Now you've done it !!!

Now you've done it !!!

Dear Henry Wadsworth Shortfellow's Jockstrap Breath,

Naturally all the pool junkies liked it...Whats not to like ?...Pretty neat that Freddy read it at the dinner...But, now, if you ever go there, you will be beseeched with autograph seekers, like I have been for years now..:help

PS..I finally had to start selling mine, like Pete Rose, ($200) to avoid the crush...Allen Hopkins was pissed, so I gave him half off !. :lol :lol :lol

If you're fishing for compliments, you've snagged another one.
Rod.
P.S. Still love it, changes and all.

No fishing Rod:p, Freddy had only one copy of it and people were wondering where they could see it so I put it on the first page, that's all:).

P.S. I think Larry is going to get a headache trying to find my one edit:D.

SBL,

I'm sure it'll be forgotten in a day or two. That is the nature of the internet.

Steve is planning on doing a montage of photos of the ghostly visitors as the visual background of the actual rendition (by moi, or as they say in German, old ich) and he will post it on here and YouTube.
I think it will be great and not easily forgotten.

Thank you Ray.

Freddy, I've never had the chance to hear anyone read anything that I wrote. The simple poems that I write are always old news to me and don't really move me all that much. I've written them about Cornbread, CJ & Fast Freddy and a few others and they are no big deal to me, but I must tell you that I have tears coming from both eyes after hearing you read this to the D.C.C. HOF dinner audience.

Thank you Freddy, I had no idea you were going to do this.

It really was great that Freddy did that...It really moved me too, as it would any lover of the game...(it just kills me to let you know that)..;)

PS..Are you sure those were tears, or did you just splash some "Jameson's finest" in your glazed, crossed eyeball's ?..:p

I'm hittin' the Miller Lite & Jenna's finest lightly tonight (dayshift tomorrow) but the tears are real. I've rarely actually heard anyone's opinion concerning the poems that I've written. I know they are just simple "working man's poems" and they aren't up there with Frost, Hughes or Plath (or Dr. Suess:)) but I've always hoped they resonate with us ordinary people. That's all I ever hope for when I write.

The ending Freddy read was different than yours here.
"Just think of us when shooting the nine"
"For you'll be up here when it's your time"

I think that was better.
