Maybe you and Vapros can kick it off again.

I will never let this thread die a natural death:) . Now that you and persona non grata are trading barbs again all seems normal here, with the exception of the moronic political posts anyway.

I plucked this off AZB. The caption is Bensinger Health Factories, 1918. Do the buildings shown have any relation to the notorious Bensinger's of Artie and Fred's days?

29 W Randolph is the address of the Bensingers that I originally hung out in. They closed in '61 and moved to Clark and Diversey. Artie was too young to go into 29 W. Norman Bensinger owned the joint. Same guy as in the picture. He was a bit of a roustabout and the black sheep of the family. The family had owned Brunswick. He married an alcoholic blonde floozy who wound up with the alcoholic counter man, Eddie Miller after Norman died. In the 20s Bensinger had 9 joints in the Chicago loop.

Italy, Like France,...has lost every war they ever entered, (or tried to avoid) ... If not for US (as you alluded to in your D-Day post) they would be speaking German now. :D

Mussolini thought he'd picked a sure winner, when he sided with Adolph....We all know how that turned out..

Let us see ...... Italians ....are not they the ones who brought the world the Roman Empire? I think they kicked a llittle ass there.

And France .... are not they the folks without whose aid and assistance we would still be flying the Union Jack?
And if memory serves, they did win a war in the 700's .... Charles the Hammer I think it was saved Europe from enslavement by some Islamic folks.

COurse I could be wrong. But I DOUBT IT

Fred, it looks like they had 4 floors at the W. Randolph St. locale. I take it that the pool, billiards and bowling were on separate floors?

What a great place. I fondly recall many 2nd-floor poolrooms, as well as basement ones. In earlier eras, many of the fine hotels had billiard rooms in their basement level floors. I remember a great one in Columbus, Ohio, but I can't recall the name of the old hotel. Maybe Jay can remember.

Bensingers at one time at 29 W Randolph, occupied six floors. One floor for pool, one floor for three cushion, one floor for snooker, one floor for bowling, one floor for exhibitions, and I forgot what the sixth floor was for (probably storage). In the 50s and 60s it was reduced to two floors. Pool, snooker and billiards on one floor (I think it was the 2nd) and the exhibition floor (4th?). That was the room featured in the book, The Hustler (Bennington's), not Ames in NY as was depicted in the movie. Bensinger had moved to Clark and Diversey by the time they started shooting the movie. The producers considered shooting at that location but decided the ceilings were too low (It was in a basement).

Deeman,

The "Holy Grail" secret to one pocket, is very simple. Assuming you are playing even, in order to win...you must get 8 balls in your pocket, BEFORE you ALLOW your opponent to get 8 in his. It ain't rocket surgery..

PS.. The above does not apply if he makes a ball on the break, and runs out...but what are the odds on that ???.

I like this. KISS (which means, for those of who don't know: keep It simple, stupid).

I have a question that maybe you oldtime members can answer for me. In the posts from AB that are quoted in the early part of this thread his name comes up as "One Pocket Art"; was that AB's original handle? SJDinPHX comes up as Dick McMorran. Ducky was that your original handle?

One other question; AB joined the site in Nov. 2005 and this thread was started in Aug. 2008 yet in post #11 Phil G. writes for AB at AB's request. Does this mean that AB had been a member for almost 3 years and had still not learned to post or what?

I read the whole thing last night and went to bed with my eyes bleeding. Thanks a lot for the resurrection Dennis. I still want to know one thing. When Freddy went halvers with Artie and then left the pool room while Artie was left to grind, Freddy said that Artie would dock him a barrel or two which could have added up to a lot. I was wondering about that cause I believe what either one of them say without hesitation but they are in contradiction with each other. I know I would go up with somebody and they would leave or stay and sometimes my opponent would say he lost 500 and after I paid everthing I would have like 440 in profits so you know the guy might have left the house wi 500 but he forgot about putting 20 in the poker machine and having lunch and getting cigs and all that, and where I played we kept a overall tab and you put everything on the pool tab and the winner paid it all-beer liquor, cigs food , pool time and a nice tip for the counter person which could be considerable. Anyway this has really been bothering me. Oh yea Steve if you are reading this did you get my check?? I swear before God I sent it. Let me know ok???

In life people want too think what they want too belive.

I dont have too defend myself. And its ok for Freddy too think what he wants.

I no from all the players and people U have been around in life. They no thats not me.

I do not hold out on anubody. Even if the person is a complete sucker.

If I want too hold out or give him a short count. I will never do that.

If you no what hustling is about. Why give a short count it redicoulous and stupit.

I can take it all and just dump him too anybody. Its no big deal too take it all. And get 605 or 70% off the dump.

You see if you realy look at the picture you will see it adds up.

Some people sometimes just want too think that the got short changed.

It makes them feel good like somebody got over on them. But realy the think and wanr everybody too no what the did too them so they dont feel like a sucker.

Even if it realy never happened. And it makes them fell like thier slicker then the person who beat them on the count.

Thier are a lot off people who do that. But I am not one off those people.

And you should always ask the other person. If they do thay or have they done that too thee other person.

Too justifiy thier own guilt.

I short changed thousands off people. I even got Fiered for iy. And if I did something I have no problem. Admitting it.

I did it so what. But I would never short change Freddy. I would beat him but not give him a short count.

He will loose too me he will back me. He will give me a peace off his action. In a game he will win.

Thier is no reason too take advantage off him. By giving him a short count.

And if I did I would tell him that I shot counted him. Especialy now.

You have herd me nowe for a few years. And you no I do not hold back on anything. And I yell it just they way it is.

Because its the truth that makes me feel good. And lieing doesnt make me feel good and thats not me.

And when it comes too tiping people. I dont no anybody that tipit moore or higher then me.

I would tip so good in some real classy restaurants and bars. That they wouldnt even give me a check.

And even the owners would come up too me and say its on the house.

And I never went into a restaurant. Withour a reservation. And couldnt get a table.

AS soon as they would see me they would come wright up too me. And say come wright this way.

And that goes for showes and fights and anything. Back years ago. Tiping would get you whatever you wanted.

Even that has changed a lot. Places that you needed a sports coat and tie too get in.

They would get me a sports jacket too wair just soo the other coustomers wouldnt beef.

And the cheff would make us whatever we wanted. We were always first and on top off the line.

I would tip soo good that one off the people eho hung out with us would go back and take a big part off the tip.

ANd I found out years latter. And I told him if I her he he went back and took part off the tip.. He coundent come with us no more.

Giving money and knoweing what too say. Will get you in anywere.

And my youngest dughter thaught it was real cool. When I would tip a waiter or one off the people seating us.

And duke him the money shaking hands. And she would even practice doing it.

And she askt me if she could do it with a waiter or someone seating us. And after she did it they would look at her.

And she would feel so good. And she thought it was the coolest thing thier was.

And she was about 9 or 10 years old. Andshee would look at me like she realy did something sneeky and cool.

And on new years. I would buy my daughters new dresses. And we would go too a new years eve party. And thier were no kids allowed.

But they were like 8 and 12 years old. And they would get in the new years party. Were thier were no kids allowed.

And they would dress up and look like movie stars. And everyone would look at them.

I even went to Gorga and I would go too er class. And she would tell all the kids and teacher. That I was the biggest bettor in las vegas.

And I went in front off her class. And talket about gambling in las vegas.

And all the kids wanted too do that too. Because everyone likes winning.

But I told them that you need the odds in your favor or you cannot win.

And they askt me a buntch off qouistions. And then they even askt me about Hustling pool.

I guess my daughter told them everything about me.

And one little girl about 9 years old asket me. Whatsa pool hustler.

And I said a pool hustler is a person who plays pool for money. And he gets the money out off the persons pocket and puts it in his pocket.

And they make good games were they can win. And they went on and on. Like they new me thier whole life.

And even the teacher was all ears. Because she never herd stuff like this.

And when it was over the started saying when are you coming back.

And that they were going too come to las vegas and gamble.

And I told my daugter that we will go too dinner to a real good reastaurant.

And thier choices were limited because were she lived. In Peach Tree City. And I took like 5 off her friends and they got treated like royalty.

And they all got whatever desert they wanted. And they got treated like grown ups.

Everyone seen that is was unusuale and they talket about it forever. And told all the other kids in school the next day.

One off her girl friend who never left Peach Tree City I flew her too las vegs too come and see my daughter.

And her parents didnt even know me. And the girl never left home before too come too another city.

But I told her parents that she would be ok with my daughter. And when she came too las vegas she had the time off her life.

And we went every were even old Nevada that was my daughters favorite place.

And we would go shoping and showes. And they would have fun all day.

And at night get dresst up and go out. We went too a lot off them parks. and fun places.

One off my most enjoyable momonts was when I would go with my daughters too the Forum shops in ceasers palace.

And I would set on a bech or on a chair. And they would look in the stores for houers.

And look at everything. And they would get treated like the real clasy and rich women.

And they would have them try on all these different expensive dresses. And they wold spend thousands off dollers on close.

Then they would come home and change ito all the different clothes and dresses they bought. And they would modle and show off all thier new close.

Those were great times. And so meny stories people wouldt belive those things could happen.

BUt that was yesterday. And yesterday is gone.

AS to my Friend Freddy. He is excentrick and uneek and different. And thier mind and imagination. Sometimes gets the best off them.

But its all in fun and realy quite innocent. But if you dont realy no that person. Its hard too understand him.

Freddy is a smart man and has a good heart. But he lets his deelings get the best off him. And thats why some people pick on him.

And try too agrevate him and up set him. And it showes.

If you dont handle and control your enotions your in for a lot off abuse.

And when people see this they realy start picking on that person.

Thats what they injoy. If you dont let it affect you it doesnt mean anything.

And people wont foucus on picking on you. If you let it affect you. It can realy get too you. If you let it eat on you.

But I never held out on you Freddy. Because I would never feel wright about it. And its too petty for me too do.

I just take it all and give the plater a few dollaers and say we broke even.

IT wouldnt be hard too do. And when you can get a persons money. You dont need too hold out.

Thats for people who dont win too offten.

But you can rest easy nowe. And dont met these EGGS get to you.

Thier real very nice fellowes. Be nice and diplamatic like Billy. Dont be like me. You have too be who we are.

Too all the people who realy new you. You will allways be Superman.

Dont ever let go off that.

Her is one for you. ITs great and pwerfull like the speed off a bulit.

Banking with. Superman. Freddy the Beard. Banks that fly into the center off the pocket.

THats enough I dont want too spoil everyone. Were spoiled enough.

If you cant bank you cant play.

UP Up and away.

Great post Artie,

I took the liberty of doing a slight [sic] bit of editing. Some may think you are writing longer posts Artie, but they just seem longer now, because you use double spacing...:)

As you can see, I carefully research all your posts, for those few hidden gems of wisdom...

PS Also removed a tiny bit of "off topic" content..

Thanks Mr. McMorran and thanks Artie for the explanation. I would like just say that next to my name it says that I have been a member since 07 but I left and forgot about this site and only came back a couple of months ago, so I had to catch up, but I will never leave again unless I get barred. Arties' post do not seem long to me at all. I read them and go back and read them again and try to remember all advice and instructions, not only about pool but about life in general.

In school they should teach young children all about gambling and the odds and percentages. It could help them tremendously. I know. I use to have a lot of ignorant customers that came in my casino and thought they could actually win. I would try to cousel some of them. They would bring their kids and stay there. At first I would take kids and play wi them in the back office and let them go to sleep. But they would stay all day and night so I had to make a no children rule. It was pathetic. And it caused couples to lie to each other. A girl would say to me-''Hey don't tell my husband I hit the Keno" I don't want him to know. And her husband would say to me later on "Hey don't tell my old lady I got this extra $300" I would just sigh. The mistrust they had was horrible. I couldn't live that way. I would split.

And they would see like the Powerball Jackpot was on 120 million or something and buy up hundreds of chances and I would try to explain the futility of it but they would say something like= Well somebody has to hit it. And the winner would not even come from our state and I would not even buy one chance on the game for myself cause I knew I couldn't even sell a winning ticket unless I was incredibly lucky but they were not informed and not educated like people on this forum who know the score. Out of all the millions of dollars I sold, I never sold one Big Game Winner. Not One Powerball Winner. Not One GA State Lottery Winner. I did sell one second place 150k Powerball Winner. Big Deal......

I use to tip sort of big but nothing like you. I had lots of waiters and waitressed follow me to the check out to shake hands or give me a hug or whatever but no big deal

And what you did with your daughter was precious and very intelligent. It is a lesson in life. Like that old song from M Haggard. Things I learned in the hobo jungle were things they never taught it a classroom, like where to find a handout while bumming through Chicago in the afternoon.

So that totally explains this descrepancy between You and Freddy. Just a little misunderstanding. I believe you and your explanations without question. And as far as the guy going back for his end of your tip. Now that takes the cake as far as hustling. I don't know whether to cuss him out or give him a medal. I'm just kidding. That would really upset me. Sinatra would have an associate duke the folks. And sometimes he wouldn't believe them. He would say. Hey did you duke that kid yet. And his man would say sure, I just gave him a c note ten minutes ago. And Frank would say well when he comes back Duke Him Again!!!

ps I still think about your brother John and His Wife Donna from Beaver Falls, Pa. and what you did for them and his awful ordeal with chemo and radiation treatments. Certain things stay with you, I suppose.....

In life people are all different and think different. And some people have too find a perpose in life.

So thier life has meaning. And some people want too feel that they accomplished something in life.

That they were just her visiting. And lived and doed. They need to feel that they did something in life and for people too belive in what they say.

And in life if you belive in yoursef and that you can hamdle anything.that comes your way.

You will be ok. And some people are more sensetive then others. And yake everything more serious.

WE cant change anybody. But we can change ourself.

And anything we learned too do or habit. We can etop it or change it.

Just like we started it.

Freddy is a loving careing man. And he should not let people get too him.

And in this world thats hard to do. Because we cant control nobody but ourselfs.

And if you learn to let go off whatever bothers you. You will make yourself a stronger person.

Or else it will keep getting too you and tear you apart.

I no its a better to get along with everyone. Then too keep on going with something nobody will win at.

If you dont let go it will tear you apart. And some people hold on too that thier whole life.

Even Familys and kids and parents. THe hold it against one another forever.

Be a loveing careing person and lofe will be great.
