I remember the thread where the Beard's list was built. Like Freddy said, it was a contest that you could try to name at least five guys that the Beard had not played (and beat?). If you did so, you got a 'Banking with the Beard' T-shirt. I added a couple that he had played and didn't have on his list. James Christopher and "Dallas" Joey Torma. SJD, since I think you spent some time in Dallas, did you ever know Torma?

OSG,

My time in Texas was 60's, very early 70's....Rodney and James C. were just pup's then. James and I went on to become good friends, in later years. We had many mutual friends...(Jack Terry, Charlie Brown, and many more)....He's a good solid guy, as is Rodney.

I knew everybody who was active at the time, and I'm quite sure I had heard of Joey,...and I may have known him, but I believe he became a good player after I left...ICBW...Rod-????

Yes a little later. Joey was a very talented young pool player, but his career went in a different direction. I'm sure Alfie can give you details if you still talk. I believe he was a little younger than Alfie.

Rod,

Yes, Alfie lives here, and we talk, or get together at least once a week or so...I think Alfie is around 60, (Edit, Alfie is 66)...and I'm sure he knew everybody who came along in those years.
Hard to believe Jack is about 14 years his senior. Alfie and I were plannig on going to go to the Galveston thingy, and stay with Jack (even blew a few $$$ on non-cancellable air fare)...until things came up, and we couldn't go.

As I sit here pecking away, I have many memories, and mixed emotions, and I can't help but wonder, what would have happened... had I stayed in the pool scene...(San Quentin, Attica..Dead....who knows ?).

It all worked out OK...but I sure missed a lot of really great stuff..didn't I ?..;)

yea dick, you missed the big expansion in the economy where the bankers, doctors lawyers, bookies, cardplayers, thieves all had tons of money and bet it up. where you could get them down for 100,s or 1000,s a game and they couldnt get out if needing two balls. all you needed to do was let them have lots of shots and even shoot at their money balls. then they never quit you and passed on all the runout players who were only playing on a couple barrels and couldnt stall.

I believe Joey recently passed away. Was out of jail and spending the night in his extremely ill wifes nursing home in Florida.
Rod.
PS, I'll bet he didn't win more than 2 games from James.:D

I spent a lot of time around James. At lot of it around Hot Springs, AR. Winning more than 2 games from James was an event. His nickname of the Sniper was well earned. His trump card, maybe you know, was shooting balls dead straight in from corner to corner, even on a snooker table. Previous to playing James at the Rack in Detroit, I had spent 6 broke months there laying down a spread. I figured as long as I wasnt going to get in on the big action I would constantly buzz in peoples ears, establishing a weaker speed, just in case I ever got hold of a good backer. Eventually I did, a porno movie producer pool bug. I won eleven big money matches in a row there, and won some serious money, but missed out on the grand score because the biggest money guys were both in jail at the time, Jones and Red Fox.
James was one of the first guys I played with the new backer, Mike Weldon. We played the first day, he gave me 9 to 8, it was a mismatch. We played again the next day, even, for a lot more money and I won even.
We later battled often at Hot Springs when there was a lot of action there with Ronnie, Puckett, Vernon, Joe Salazar, Country Calvin, etc., etc.

Beard

Hot Springs is where Ronnie ran 10 and out on me six games in a row.

Excuse me Fred, but is this how you compiled your infamous "Beat List" ????

If it is, then I think you should scratch Joe S. off your list of conquests....otherwise, it may be tainted,...and I know you don't want that...Not tryin' to crank you up again...just sayin,....

Jack is 82 he's lied about his age so much I think he's forgotten himself. I happen to remember both he and Blinky are 10 years older than me.

You're reaching for straws again. Just think about it. He beat me with the 7, but playing even, I BEAT HIM, just like I said. I have also beat him playing 1 pkt in Hot Springs. So there. Try another category, you are stumbling badly with this one.

Beard
You know, I think this is all based on the premise that you had never heard of me, therefore I did not exist. If you never heard of anyone, how could they possibly have ever done anything? The fact that every top player knows me for the last 40 years doesnt seem to count for much. And do you know how they know me? Because I played them all! I also believe that is the same problem you have with Artie.
Plus, you base your experience with Bensingers on when you and Richie walked in, took a leak and left.
Ask Bob Ogburn, Black Bart, about The Basement. He'll tell you he spent 6 months before he finally got to beat somebody. He'll also tell you that his time in Bensingers hardened him into a top-notch, cold-blooded pool hustler.

Freddy, you will need a helluva big stone, to list all the people you have beaten, so that the general population, in the coming years, can come and genuflect and refresh their memories and marvel at your accomplishments.

I, personally, have whipped Myron Grundy, Pete Gomez, Rudy Ferguson and Rollover Trahan, but I choose not to make a crusade out of telling the world. In fact, I'm quite modest about it. Also, I note that none of these gunners are on your list. :D :D

Beardmonster,

I shall take that as a "slam"...You have pissed me off, and I SHALL retalliate...The fact that I never heard of you, (or Artie) should have no bearing on this discussion. A large part of that, was due to logistics. ( i.e., location, 20 yr. hiatus, etc.)
You have created an illusion in your mind, that Chicago was the center of the pool universe...News Flash;.. It was only one of lot of more active, (and better action) places, nationwide.

Having known RA, Richie, Jersey Red, Grady, and Billy I., and your "old buddy" U.J (and countless other "mediocre" player's on your "beat list")...most for over 40-50 years...I can't recall your name ever coming up once, in literally thousands of pool related conversations with them. (of course I can not blame them, for wanting to keep you a secret)

Face the fact Fred, you were ONLY a household name in Chicago, much as I was confined to the West coast, and Texas.

The fact that you spent your entire career, chasing around, wanting to see, and be seen...and trying to play people you could NOT beat on your best day...should have no bearing on our dissenting viewpoints.

Sure, everyone around the midwest knew you...you were their favorite target...heh,heh.:D :D :D

PS..The worlds greatest "traveling pool sucker"..Surfer Rod,...was far better known than EITHER of us..what's your point ?

PSS ..This has nothing to do with my promise, never to doubt your word,... ever again !.

I find that neither funny nor cute, and it only supports an aspersion casting jerk-off.

The master of "issue avoidance" strikes YET again...

PS..El Beardo, why are you so shocked that my "support group", and my "international fan club",...seem to FAR outnumber the people on your "Beat List"...? :D

If you two guys don't stop this nonsense I will post my own "beat" list consisting of the 637 players that beat me and the players that I beat. The losers may not like it but I'll tell the full stories of how I beat them both into utter submission and stole their cash, their girlfriends and their dignity.

Just dare me to compile a list, dare me I say:D .

Cowboy "ain't never beat nobody(but 2 guys)" Dennis

We're getting real close to me having to type up my beat list. I remember the names of all 636 guys & the 1 girl that beat me but for the life of me I can't remember the names of the 2 guys that I beat.

The last time I tried to be funny and cute at the same time was in a college bar during my 20s. I got pepper spray in the eyes for it. You think I'd try something like that again around this crowd here?

I don't have a "beat list" because I hardly ever knew who I was playing.

Never lost it Dennis....:)...

Can't pass up the fun of joking around on here...:)....but I probably shouldn't join in on any shot choice threads anymore - after surprisingly finding out that my liking my own shot choice the best and strongly saying so, can make a person very angry and hate on me......I just never realized that I was supposed to be all nicey-nicey/politically correct in shot-choice discussions and say things like:

"Well gee, I kinda like my shot choice, but I think everybody else's shot choices are great too, and mine is certainly no better than anyone else's"

...Ghost.....
