Artie

Artie

My own opinion is that the players I favor for the One Pocket HOF are the players that really adopted the game -- they lived and breathed and survived on it and advocated for it for years. That does not include the super all-around players that just happened to also be able to win at One Pocket because it was another cue game. That is why I will not be voting for Harold Worst, Jim Rempe or Mike Sigel for the HOF. Shane is only 28, so he has a lot of future in front of him. I also give him credit for getting in the box for cash at the game pretty frequently. By the time he is old enough it will be pretty clear whether he embraced the game or not.

Artie, from all I have heard -- not just from Freddy :D -- is that he played a carefully controlled game as well or better than anybody. I.e., he may not have had the firepower of the other "best" but he had the strategy, defense, patience and master plan, along with sufficient shooting skills to compete successfully with the best in his own manner. Even his detractors seem to agree he was about the best at that style of play. By the way, before I ever heard, "What would Efren do?", I heard, "What would Artie do?" -- and if you have listened to many of the older Accustats One Pocket videos you will know what mean.
I have played and sweated one pocket with many of the best for fifty years and did not play Artie until three years ago when we were both "old guys". We have each won a race to seven and it took a total of around thirty hours of playing time.

Artie does things to wear you out and break you down. You are always frozen to a rail, jacked up over a ball or both. He takes multiple balls out of your hole with shots only he understands.

I can only imagine how good his game was when he was younger with more firepower. He analyzes every possibility before he pulls the trigger and that can be aggravating, but he isn't stalling, he actually puts that much brainpower into each shot.

He never says a peep unless you ask him something and he never sits down in the whole session. A sweator who was watching us play in one of the matches said he would rather have needles stuck in his eyes than to watch again.

His style is not pretty, but it works for him and gets the cash.

Extraordinarily accurate examination of the Artie experience.

I asked Nick Varner one time on the chat when he stepped into the mic box how Artie played. He said Artie was a "grinder" and a "real good player".

That's all I have. :)

Skin < always bet his own

I asked Nick when he was in the booth, and he said, "He beat me once, and he would only play on one table."

Apparently, you only need to play on one table to make it to HOF.....

Freddy,

I think you & I both feel pretty much the same way about AB vs. RA especially since you watched their "Match Of The Century" (as did lll).

P.S. So-called "players" who walk into a room and can't bet their own can kiss my ass, they aren't even poolplayers to me.

Dennis -

With this reasoning, there may be 3-4 pool players in the entire world. From Buddy Hall to most pool players I know are staked.

That, "he beat me once" line was a little more involved than that. The "once" was actually five straight days of poundings. The "one table" thing was not so accurate either. In my joint, North Shore Billiards, unlike Bensingers, we had no "trap" tables. They all played about the same and Artie played on all of them.

While Bensingers was replete with Bear traps all over the joint, North Shore had ordinary playing, ordinary pocket Gold Crowns. We did have a few 5 x 10s but we couldnt lead anybody to them at gunpoint.

Can you tell me how old Varner was when he played Artie? Varner didn't play his best one pocket until he was in his 30's, around 1980.

I remember reading about this game in The Beards' interview on this site. Nick didn't want to quit because he was learning so much and he thought the lessons were worth the price. I'm sure they were. It was right after Nick had gone to NY with his dad and won the Straight Pool Championship which was 1980 so maybe you can figure from there. Nick was born in 1948 I think.....

I believe 1980 it was.

Nick beat everybody in town on that trip except two people, and won a lot of money. He lost badly to Artie after beating him easily earlier for 450 a game, and he broke even with me playing for $200 a game.
When Nick first came to town he came 15 games ahead of Artie for $50 a game. Here is how much significance I gave to that game. I played Nick even for $200 a game immediately thereafter (broke even) and tried to stake Artie to play him some more.

Beard,

How do you explain Artie losing all those games and then "pounding" him for five days?

Good question

Good question

Beard,

I have never properly figured out an answer to that. One thing I do know is that the more Artie played somebody the better he played against him. He was scared and shaky just like everybody else when he played a new, strange player. Sometimes it took a while to discover his oppo's weaknesses. I do know what he said after the Varner 15 game strumming, "He aint got a clue about how to play one pocket."

Beard
Also, the pounding took place a month later. A month of watching Nicky play. (Artie had 30% of all of Nicky's play that month, and he beat almost everybody)

When the One Pocket Ghost was in his prime (1970's)...

If you locked the Ghost up for a week with Raquel Welch, Brigitte Bardot, Pam Grier, Ursula Andress, Bo Derek, Priscilla Presley, Lynda Carter and also a young teenage Rosie O'Donnell, and Janet Reno, and maybe Barney Frank.......

All but one of those hotties would have come out of that room - sore and pregnant...:heh

- Ghost
Much more likely, they would exit with several varieties of sexually transmitted diseases...(from you drooling on them)..:p :p :p

PS..It would be hard to get ole Barney pregnant, but he is 'your type'
...and I'm sure you'd give it your best shot...Heh, heh !!!

<-------- Perfect example

You know, once in awhile you get lucky and think of something...but 90% of the time your jokes are lame, unfunny, and unwitty - :sorry but it's the truth...and since you've asked me in previous posts >>> that's why I don't reply to them lately - they're not remotely at a high enough level to deserve one of my high-level jokes in response...

...if I were to lower my comedic level and joke back in response to your lame attempts - it would be the equal of you asking me to play One Pocket for split-time, and me saying yes......:sorry.

- Ghroast

PS, In my second paragraph, I threw you a bone, and graced you with one of my high-level witticisms - try and learn from it...your welcome...

Yes, I'm the same way as Superduck sometimes. I put up material that offends at times but I don't really mean to. My musical selections and videos failed miserably. Someone here at home even said they were in poor taste. I didn't understand. Mr. G.G. Allins Performances always made me feel like a bigger man somehow. I won't put up any links to a porn site but if you want some laughs, go to the free site called hamster porn and in the little search box on the top right, type in Little Lupe vs The Sybian. It is a segment from The Howard Stern Show and it is hilarious. Lupe meets this 80 yr old inventor of the sybian, a device that gives girls multiple orgasims. She is totally repulsed by him. The actor, David Arquette is on hand. This girl is a laugh riot. Howard, his sidekick Robyn, Arquette, her fiance, and everybody in the building is trying so hard to talk this tiny little girl out of her clothes and I never laughed so hard in a long time. She is a porn petite superstar and makes my top ten for sure. Warning=explicit language some nudity, God forbid. Hey if it ain't funny, it aint much.

The Ghost is right Ducky. You've resurrected a thread that's lain dormant for the last 15 days and then you claim "hi-jack complete". Are you nuts? The thread was dead and forgotten, until you got bored last night.:p

Yes the Goatst would like to play all the 80 year olds (the ones that have the yips) but I doubt he'll let you stake him. :D:p
