Billy; I was talking with a friend of ours from Vegas, and he reminded me about the time you played, Toby, the owner of the "Cue Club" some 1 hole.

I didn't believe what he said about the results, just thought I'd get it from the "horses mouth!"

I played Toby around the year 1998 at the Cue Club in Vegas. The Cue Club is the most famous room in Vegas and has been the most popular room in Vegas for almost 50 years. Since 1964 all the champions played at the Cue Club at one time or another..great room. Toby owns the Cue Club and plays there regularly..especially on the first table in the pitted area.

I played Toby a set for $20,000 ten ahead with me getting 9 to 8. Artie was staking me and he only came down once for about two hours and left. Well I guess he had better things to do..and I wasn't mad at him.;)

The match lasted four days all eight hour days. The first two days was a dog fight and we broke even after 16 hours of play but in day three I started to feel more comfortable with the conditions and his style of play, ending up up five games ahead after day three. I was very confident going into day four and won the set maybe four hours into day four.

I played him again around 2000 or 2001 with 10 to 8 on his break even on mine and he beat me easily. He played great and I dogged it and played poorly, I played better pool in 1998, well you know how those things work..some times it's fun and other times it's not.:D

Imo Toby at that time played the speed of a player like Gentile, there's a lot of similarities in their games. Toby also played good banks, as Gentile does, and good 3 cushion. He also played as Artie says..excellent one handed pool, however, Toby quit playing pool in around 2003, it was the strangest thing for a player that loved the game as much as he did, just get up and quit. Toby loved "money" as much or more than he loved pool..money won out.:D

I can confidently say that Toby and Buddy Hall have this one thing in common, and that is that both of them hates losing more then they like winning.

I believe Toby moved back to Oklahoma where he was raised and now is into real estate and doing well. Areal competitor.

You played and worked hard to win that session. And All I herd was Billy cant win Billy cant win . Billy doesn't have a chance.

My reply was that's when Billy wins when he doesn't have a chance. And that's what motivates him and he plays at a higher level. When he cant win. That's when the real players show what they are made of.

And Billy I has always enjoyed tough action. And billy was never a one or two barrel man. He played to bust you or you bust him. When Billy goes to the table he goes there to play. And there is no better person to play then billy. And what makes Billy such good action. He loves to play and gamble. Billy is the best person to play and gamble with.

And he is not a soar looser. You win you win. Tomorrow is another day. I no they way I play frustrates Billy and aggravates him. And he mite even say he has never been tortured more than watching me play. Even in a partner game. Maybe now he can see why Freddy never watched me play. Freddy would give me the money and leave. I think Billy figured out how I could give my opponent a heart attack playing me.

I wonder if I was Billy's worst person to watch me play. At least I can be number one at something. Beside making faces. What do you think Billy I.

Artie, I can honestly say that the game you and Ricky Bird played (1 game) (when we were waiting for Clint to finish his tournament match to join us back in playing the partner match) was the longest..most aggravating, stressful, teasing game that I have ever watched BY FAR That one game took over four hours to play, and the lead went back in forth from one player needing one ball and the other player needing three and four balls, to the player needing three and four balls to needing one ball and then back to three and four balls, and back and forth like this for over four hours. This must of happened four times with you as the player that initially needed only one ball and he needed like five balls with all balls out of play. It was a never ending game and I almost left town in the middle of it, i'm sorry.:(:sorry I couldn't believe it how a player (Artie) who once was the strongest mover in the world could possibly allow his opponent (who was the inferior player) to get back into the game like he did. I'm still mad just thinking about it:frus:frus And then you lose the game.:(

Yes Artie, that one game was absolutely the most stressful game I have ever watched being played..or even played myself. I think I aged five years watching those four hours of pool.

But I still love ya.

I was sitting at the sportsbook bar of the Sunset station about five years ago when I saw Toby coming from the counter with a handful of football bets. We talked for a while. He said that he quit pool because he broke his shooting elbow and it was never going to be the same. He still lived in Vegas then and I don't think that he still owned part of the cue club. I learned a lot by watching him play. He used to beat Donny Williams playing one handed to Donny's two 1p on table 15 at the Cuetopia. Areal talent and fierce competitor

The Doctor told me it would cure your back. By standing up and walking around. So I took the doctors order

But look at all the fun we had. And that will be a memory for Ricky Bird for life. Winning gives us more money. But loosing teaches us lesions. Too bad somebody didn't tape it.

It could have one first prize the most aggravating and irritating game of one pocket ever played in life.. And nobody wanted to win. One thing about gambling one side is always happy and one side is always sad.

I no one thing every body wanted the match to end. But nobody left to go to sleep. After the game I told Ricky Bird he will never in life forget this game. Because you just don't see games kike that.

You never no what the unexpected brings. And every body always watches good matches. Some times you watch a bad match.

Everybody had excitement but not the result they wanted. I will do better next time. I hope.

John I think you missed your call in life. I think you should have been a English teacher instead of a bank pool player. Its still not to late to get a job teaching. English. And who knows you might like it.

I think your very good at spelling. And I want to thank you for letting me no about my spelling. Because I would have never known what a poor speller I am. Maybe we can back you in a spelling contest.

In stead of a bank pool tournament. You only need to be a good speller if you have a job. And I failed sand box. That's why I took up gambling.I didn't have to spell. And I never liked spelling. And I only do things I enjoy doing.

You think if my spelling improves maybe I can become a good banker. because I bank like I spell. Thanks for letting me no. Maybe after 70 years I still have a chance to learn to spell. But if I learn to spell every word correct.

Nobody will no me. This way at least I can say I am the worst speller on the sight. I don't think spelling will help any ones pool game. Just remember these words Better yet. Spelling doesn't make you smart. Knowledge makes you smart.

Forgive yourself from errors in your past.If you learn from life.s lessons you will grow vast.

Actually your spelling is getting better, however, I don't think your bank game did.:lol

I'm really enjoying reading your postings Artie, you have opened my eyes to things that I took for granted and made me a better person for it, thanks for that.

As we grow older we start to realize the importance of living a peaceful life, and it's that kind of stuff that you are filling this forum with and doing it in a way that imo gets our attention.:) Thanks for being here and being my friend, you have shown that many times in our life. keep doing what you're doing and whatever you do..don't change.:D

Enjoy the rest of your life.

I enjoy all of Artie's posts and wouldn't want him to change any part of them.

Sorry if I gave the wrong impression, Artie. It was a pool-related joke ("losing wounds us") - just not a very good one, I guess.

Artie; This is one of your BEST posts about life as we ALL go through changes. Whether it be, age, ability, education, financial and most importantly, Socially!
I truly think, you may have missed your calling, "Psychologist!" The strange thing about someone's grammar and spelling is, if you were standing in front of people, "LIVE," speaking these same profound words you've stated about life, you would NEVER be scrutinized for how they translates to print!

No one really knows what's in the heart of another being, till he feels it's time to reveal their TRUE self! Stay TRUE to all things, buddy!

Bill, I heard about your game with Toby from Fred Guarino and I thought that you might have had the worst of it at that time. My reason for thinking this way was he was on the serious improve and you were not playing much. Toby was one long winded player at that time and if you played 16 hour days, i'm not sure you could have gotten there. He was very athletic and given his wrestling background by literally grinding matches out, he was one tough SOB. I played him a similar game at Cue Topia for a lot less stakes ($200/game) and got there for 5 games and he wanted to move me to the Cue Club and jack it up and I passed on that. I think I got lucky and won actually. I did watch him beat Archie the Greek out of $750,000 all cash at Cue Topia and that was the most impressive win I ever saw. He gave Archie 13/5 and Archie could have won every game as it went down to the case ball or two every game.

this is absolutely true, every thing.

I remember when toby had not played Archie, and he set his sights on that game. He practiced harder than I ever seen anyone-even harder than SVB, perhaps not the hours Shane puts in. But with more intensity and killer instinct. He made beating Archie his lifes mission. Sadly I was not there to bet my lifes saving on that game, i would have.

I'm perhaps the 2nd most happy person second to Toby that he won(for other reasons). If there was ever a lock in pool the Archie/Toby game was it. IMO. since i been around 85.

Some good stories in this thread. Toby is supposedly in real estate now, that is a good one. I would bet anything too that he is doing very well. I'll tell you what, if you can compete at top levels in pool, you can take those same skills and do well anywhere. It is all about learning how to prepare yourself, and being mentally tough is why. Toby was playing some of the best pool players in the world, now he is up against a housewife realtor with 3 kids and a mortgage. Which one is tougher to outmaneuver?
