I watched with great interest JB and some other good bank pool players play in the ring game at the Diamond tournament.

These were supposed to be the best bank players of the current era.

I spent a year on the road with Taylor and if he had been in the ring game it would have been over in less than 2 hours. When he got a shot he would simply clear the table.

I was practicing bank with Taylor in Memphis one day when he banked 14 and out. By the way, he was playing with one hand to my two.

Taylor and Buggs were just in a different league. That's why I reserve the word GREAT just for them.

PS: I once asked my cue ball to stop and It didn't. It fell right in the darn hole:lol Pretty please,tell me how the cball knows if you short stroked it or long stroked it. A hit is a hit,Is it not?. I'm still tryin to learn here but you have really lost me on this one. Maybe someone will come out of the wood work and explain this I do not believe it!!!!!!!!

I robbed Black Howard when I was about 19,the day before my first fullrack bank tourney,I think It was at a Place called chris billiards. Funny thing about playin him...we started at 50 a rack I won that one, he bumped to it 100,I won that one,he bumped it to 200 and I won two more in a row and he had enough:lol I had a great time playing with him,too!

Sorry Mr. Bill, I don't know how to do anything like that. I might try to get my son to help me. It will have to be after I get back from the TSC.Thanks,for the request. John B.

PS: I think winning BIG tourneys count for more than just playin some guy heads up.You got to beat a bunch of good players not just one Some of the sets I play for at the end of the big tourney are for alot of money too:lol.

They invited us over to the south side ( I can't remember the name of the pool hall) after the tourney was over but they said it was kinda ruff over that way,so we declined. I remember Buggs telling us the poolhall was fine, it was when you left the room is where you might have some (gang) problems:lol

I learned alot from my match with Buggs. Quite often he would just leave me out in the table and I would jump out of my chair but then when I got up to the table,everything would be on some double kiss or somethin. Didn't take me long to see that he was leaving me like that on purpose:lol Buggs let me go outside to take a couple nips with him,I thought that was so cool!! He was nice dude to play with,no sharking or anything like that. JB

I'm not one of the science guys but I have listened in on enough of their discussions -- guys like Bob Jewett and Ron Shepard -- to know that the CB does not know or care about your follow through (or grip). The contact time between the cue tip and cue ball is a few milli-seconds. You could conduct the Boston Philharmonic with your follow through, but the CB would not care. It is *long* gone by the time you follow through.

I agree with you that playing conditions today are much different than when Taylor and Buggs were playing their best.

I am having a hard time adjusting to the balls. Not the tight pockets so much.
The balls just act weird.

I have seen Buggs and Taylor both play on double shimmed GC and they both seemed to play very well.

From what I have seen from modern bank players they play well but not as good as either Buggs or Taylor. Never did see them play 9 ball banks.

I met Fonzie at Red Shoes. He told me how he would protect Freddie and his entourage in the hood back in the day. He went on and on about how Freddie was so kind and good that he needed someone around him to keep him from being mugged. Fonzie at 70 is still a very imposing figure. I doubt not at all that he still packs heat. I met Henry the wrinkler when I took a piss.

You're correct in what you say when you say that the cue ball doesn't know how short or long your stroke was that preceded the hit. Nor does it know if you tighten up your back hand to execute certain shots to get the results you need, however, you use the follow through and the "check stroke" along with the tightening of the back hand not so much to dictate what is needed to make things happen, but to use as a technique to develop the understanding with..how to make it happen. Imo.

Different strokes, hmmm? How could I have been so dumb all these years? The fact that I was such a "good" shotmaker must have been what kept me going all those years.


Incidentally, I never turned down protection when I played on the South Side, but I went in and out of those joints solo, many, many times.

When I attended Wilson Jr College, it was in the middle of the South Side, I used to take my lunch breaks wandering up and down the streets walking into strange pool rooms. In those days there was a poolroom on every corner and one in the middle of the block.
