Ronnie Allen's description of his short life was completely fascinating. Including the fact that he called him the best all around player ever. I would love to hear more about him if any of you gents could share any stories. Even if it was before your time but you heard a good one. Thanks!

I never met Harold Worst myself but I had an apartment in Grand Rapids for a couple of years and played a lot of guys who knew him well. This is what they told me:

He was world champion in straight pool, 3-cushion, and snooker in the same year. If he found himself in a bad game, which was easy to do because he gave out great spots, he wouldn't quit. He would get even and then quit. He thought he was better than anybody he played. I mean he really thought he was better as a human being--superior. He was a first class gentleman.

There were two shoe stores in the town where he lived.
He owned one, the other was called "Best Shoes"
You've one guess at the name of his shop.

that had to be about 1965 as thats when he won everything there was in pool.
he died young in his late 30's right after that. he didnt get to beat everybody as no one wanted to play him.

but thats how legends are made.

I saw him play in Johnson City in 65 or 66, he was a very classy guy. He was always dressed well and just showed a lot of class. I remember he was the man to beat that year. Just spent the weekend there, had to get back to college in Bowling Green Ky. Went there to watch a local nine ball player, Johnnie Edwards play.

Johnie Edwards was a good one, especially in his own room.

I have two stories about Harold Worst.
The first was that he won the World 3C Championship in Buenos Aries in the 1950's and that Juan and Eva Peron had to have him escorted out of Argentina with a military escort to prevent his demise. Fact or fiction only a few players would know. Perhaps Mr. 3C could chime in on this one?
The second was that he was barred from the ring games in Johnson City and that he could be hired out by any player at any time in the ring game to shoot a shot for them. This one might be confirmed by Dr. Bill although I'm not sure if he attended the first few Johnson City events.

Some time ago I had asked Marshall Carpenter about Worst, after hearing that audio of Ronnie on youtube describing their match-up in Jacksonville. I wanted to find out how much of it was factual.

Squirrel said that he had already listened to the audio, and most of it was close to what happened. He said that Worst rarely missed a shot and his stroke was very powerful. He beat everyone easily in 9-ball, even, and only lost when giving up too much weight. Marshall would only play him 9-ball if he got the breaks and Harold agreed to that, which was more than enough weight for Marshall to beat him.

He was a really nice guy, and very polite to everyone from what Marshall said. He wouldn't play 1P that day with anyone, only 9-ball, so that's the only game they played that session.
