Looks like we start on October 12. These ought to be good and might get more response than you expect. Thanks Doc ...

Yeah, Richie, we'll see how it plays out in terms of turn-out, and length of tournament. It's intended to be a reasonably short event. Hopefully it'll wrap up in 5-6 hours, which will leave the lads plenty of time to match up afterward. I'm not going to promote it outside the area, but I'm sure we'll get a few snarly-toothed hustlers from New Orleans tryin' to sneak up on us po' hicks over here.;)

I've run several large events which were well received, but they took a toll on me. I realized that it was too much for me to promote, TD, and also play. I could promote and TD another one, but for what purpose? I like to play. A smaller monthly event will be less hassle, cause more one-pocket to be played, AND I get to play. Tom D. has agreed to TD, so I can be an average participant.:)

We'll see you on 10/12, ole buddy. Y'all better come down to practice on those wet Diamonds. They play a lot different from that nice dry GC you have!

Doc,
you have three players now...

P.S. I am not a shortstop, still trying to figure out why you didn't put me as a C player...

Word's Out

Word's Out

I received an email from Joey A. complimenting Doc's flyer for the Second Saturday Tournaments. Given that the word is out in the New Orleans pool community, we might get a few of my fellow reprobates from there.

I get 9-6 from Col. Bille??!! Life is good.

Just because you get 9-6 doesn't mean you will like it...

Just saying, I have touched a cue at least once since we played last...lol

I'm in the middle of a dental emergency right now but will travel to the coast, maybe next week to hit a few balls. I'm glad to hear that you have been improving your game. I guess it's because you habituate those tight Diamonds. I suggest to you that the brain cell demons that Freddy talks about are invigorated in both players when on those tables. We'll see ...

Passed through Gulfport

Passed through Gulfport

I had occasion to pass through GPT yesterday afternoon and stopped by Skeeter's. I attempted to sign up and pay for the Second Saturday Tournament but the guy behind the bar said he believed that the fees would be collected the day of the game. He took my name and number and said he would "put my information in the office."

I took a quick look around and there appeared to be no notables present in the pool area, however there were approximately 50 plus people watching the football games.

Been playing myself - a real stupidity contest ...

Hey, Richie! Yeah, they're only allowing sign-ups in person on the day of the monthly events. That removes the situations where guys phone to try to sign up, or to delay the tournament because "they're on the way"...;)

If you're ever by there later on Thursday or Saturday afternoon's, we can bang 'em around.

don't feel like the lone stranger practice with one's self... all I do is break, get out of the break, rack, break... it is insanity... yet has improved my break, and somewhat my first shot after the break... I already know that one and stop is my primary game...

Really looking forward to Saturday...

According to an old Willie Jopling tape that I saw, the break and escape practice drill is one of the best for effective practice. I also do that; however, you are right on about the maddening aspect of this practice. On the other hand, pool, especially One Pocket, would not be as fascinating to us if it was easy.

My personal practice also involves practicing safties and digging balls out of a pocket - another level of insanity. I could go on but you know exactly what I mean.

First event report...

First event report...

Well the premier "2nd Saturday" one-pocket tournament at Skeeter's in Gulfport, Miss. is in the record books.

1st-Glen Kelly; 2nd-David Hall; 3rd-Col. Bille.

It was a good first event, which everyone enjoyed. I learned that races to 2 on the losers' side drags it out too long, so the next one will limit the losers' side races to 1. Also, Mr. Hall was unfortunately over handicapped. He played as a "C", but he actually plays at the "B" level. So next time we'll bump him up.;)

We had nice appearances by several 1p.o guys: Richie Sharp, WGCP, Gbru, and Gulfportdoc. Jason Moran attended but did not participate. He's taking a little sabbatical.

See y'all for the next event on November 9th!

Great time

Great time

the tournament lasted 10 hours... fading David 9-6 twice in the tournament was just too much... it came down to the last ball... unfortunately I left the pool hall mad at myself for how I played...

I made several stupid mistakes and left some really easy short rail banks for my opponents... it is a weakness I need to work on...

This is only the second one pocket tournament I have played in at skeeters, so I guess I did better than I should have...but I still have bad memories of a couple of shots...

It was fun seeing GBRU, Richard S, and Doc...

Good Event

Good Event

This was a really good small tournament with good players who were also good guys. I had not matched up in a very long time so did not do too well. I plan to work on my game and spend more time on routine shot making so I can match up better with Col. Bille.

Incidentally, Col. Bille seems to have taken the Most Improved Player trophy for 2013.

Doc's format revision seems quite sensible.

I also enjoyed the tournament and it was good to see Doc again and also his lovely wife Kittty...It was nice to meet Billy and Richie, Glen and some others whose names I can't remember....Sorry I couldn't stay for the whole tournament but I promised my niece who was with me that we would go to the casino and have dinner....As soon as we walked in to the casino we went to the crap table.

A young, pretty black lady was rolling and I got a couple hundred bucks up real fast just betting conservatively....Her next number was a 10....She rolled a couple of times and I got a hunch and dropped $50 on the table and asked for a hard 4 "on the hop".... The pitman after a few seconds of confusion next to me called "no bet" as they pulled the dice towards the shooter...BAM....! A hard 4 shoots out...UGH !....that would have been $1500. Her next roll is a 7 and out.

I tried to get Megan to roll but she was too shy...So I got the dice and rolled about 10 minutes. My last number to make was a 10....my favorite number....After about 11 or 12 rolls to hit the (10) I dropped $100 on the hard 4 "on the hop" again....BAM! I rolled a hard 10. A couple more rolls and I crapped out trying for a (9) I think it was....Just after cashing in I dropped a hundred dollar bill on the table and asked for the hard 4 again....The guy rolled a (3).

As we were walking away I heard the pitman say: "hard four"... the very next roll....hahaha... I hate those dice....So I came out about $600 ahead on the trip...Looking forward to the next tournament.

See why I don't post much...Once I get started talking I can't shut up ....hahaha!

Thanks again for the great tournament.
