Edit: clicked the link and answered my own question.......

I am too young to have seen him then but from what I heard about him, he was a beast on a small table.

That of course, was Surfer Rod. This Beat List thing is apparently catching fire. Maybe I should have taken out a copyright on it.

Rod has some great stories on his website, but when he mentions all of his ventures into Chicago he left out how many times he came into Bensingers. The answer of course was zero. At least Richie Florence and his "friend" did come in and use the toilet.

Rod left one other thing out, his long suit on the small table was the big cue ball. He was a genius with it and did some incredible things. His speed went down considerably when using a regular bar ball.

He played one pocket on the bar table with all 15 balls and also played straight pool on the bar table. I am sure that is where he played Dallas West straight pool -- on the bar box with the big cue ball and Marcel Camp played him 1pkt on the small table.

It was about three mths after my shoulder operation and I was playing good, but unable to break the balls in 9 ball. I had Rod stuck pretty good, I went to bathroom and came back, Rod had switched cue balls w/o me knowing, but I played way better than he at the time, he doubled up and I busted em. He sure enjoyed betting it up and the attention he got while in action.

Rod must have memory loss.

In Tulsa I won playing one pocket on the bar table with the big ball. Two hundred and four hundred a game. He used the kick break. I remember it like yesterday. I had to kick on the first shot every time.

And what about Lansing and numerous other time in different places.

I will admit that I learned my greatest pool lesson from Rod.
Not playing but when he told me "players don't bet and bettors can't play."
He also convinced me that the bars were where the money was.

I owe him a lot.

Nah...

Nah...

...No need for a copyright for Crissake ! There have been only two, (count em') two human beings, in the entire history of pool, brazen enough to furnish a detailed 'beat list.'...And, as many have pointed out, there have been MANY unanswered questions, discrepancies, and possible (gasp) errors, commited by both parties...The big 'cue ball' was FAR from the only thing the Surfer left out !...The jury is is still out, (way out) on both parties...

Rod has gotten a lot of milage out of his distorted view of the McGann/Dallas incident (or maybe he just forgot)...I have stated EXACTLY how it went down, ("Bad Day in Dallas")...I have played Rod, at least 20 different times..One pocket, 8Ball, and 9ball, all of which were on cracker boxes (with the big cue ball), never on a big table.. and always for very decent $$$$... So, even if I let him have the McGann incident, he is still 19 losses/1 win..lifetime against me. Most people know what Puckett "named" him..I like Rod, and he is 'VERY' computer literate..I wish he'd come on here, so we could straighten things out, it would be much easier than dealing with the other "beat list" guy. (and his illiterate homey)... I have more witnesses to those occurances, (with the Surfer) than both 'beat lists', combined. (well, almost !)

Heist-Man Mc Duck <--Is not into 'beat lists''...But if I were..all I would have to do is say "DITTO" to Rod, and the 'other guy's' lists...(as most would assume, I could have handled, the 'other guy', even easier :p)..So it stands, I could overcome ANYONE, they could beat !..

PS..Sure would save a lot of typing..! :p

Well I sure believe you Duck, about Surfer Rod. I spent a large amount of time with several of the fellows on the list, by whose name he has listed simply eight ball, and to tell the truth, I don't recall ever seeing any one of them play a single game of eight ball ever. It must have been one of his specialty hustle games like playing with the mop handle. He must have played really well if he beat Dr. Bill in nine ball back in that decade. Does anyone recall how good Pots And Pans Bernie Roglff could play rotation games and one pocket???

In my day, the big cue ball was the regular cue ball. The latter became the standard on the bar table after I retired from playing pool for a living (1964-1983). After that, I went annually to Vegas a few years then just faded away. Surfer Rod. My ego was too big to turn down a game even though I majored on a bar table with the big standard cue ball.

Great hearing from you Billy. I was in college in Denver 1971-1975 and was I was married and went on the road about 1974 during a school break. I looked different in that I had long hair and a beard but after I won playing one pocket on the bar table, you asked me name.

Pool stories, you say? Follow JAM's link to Surfer Rod's website. Pool in every form there ever was, and many of the players everyone knows by name today, plus a lot of people I never heard of. Rod has either a fantastic memory or a great imagination. I had a good time on his site. Found SJD's name in there, along with his gun-toting backer. :D

Surfer Rod was a great player only had one leak would beat 30 people then either get in a bad game or play bad and was a through ticket. He did ave a great winning % though knocked off 100s of places through the years when he was active

Rod,

If you remember, you were the one that quit loser at one pocket in Tulsa.

Remember Lansing? You showed up at the pool room to play a stranger with the big ball in your hand. When you saw it was me, you didn't want to play.
We both ended up staying in some school girls' apartment.

Great to hear from you. I hope all is well.

If you still want to play, I am available.

Bunny Rogoff was an Eightball specialist. He played it pretty damn good. The mop handle thing doesnt make sense unless they both used one or there was a gigantic spot.

Rod was big action where ever he went and he would go into the kind of joints that I would only go in with Sugar Shack Johnny by my side. He would go into them alone.
